Many social events are centered on food. In the summer, friends invite you over for a picnic or barbeque. In the fall, festivals offer tasty and fat-filled fair food like corndogs and donuts. In the winter, the holidays abound with turkey, mashed potatoes, and stuffing. The spring brings candy stuffed holidays and other family outings that forgo good eating habits. Here are some tips to beat the all-you-can-eat events:

1. Eat before you go. Being full can save your waistline.
2. Have small portions. Half a scoop of baked beans is plenty.
3. Bring something healthy to contribute.
4. Bring a low fat and low sugar sweet snack in your purse or pocket.
5. Bring your own food and claim you are on a special medical diet.
6. Avoid fried foods.
7. Avoid sugar-coated sweets like cookies, candies, and cakes.
8. Avoid anything saturated with butter.
9. Eat fresh veggies and fruit.
10. Skip second helpings.
