Sneaky Salt

Salt is everywhere and in almost everything, especially in pre-packaged foods. A lot of pre-packaged foods can contain as much as 1000 milligrams of sodium per meal. Considering that the daily recommended amount is 2400 milligrams per day, this is a huge problem. Due to new research that shows the link between sodium intake, high blood pressure, and heart disease, most of the diet foods contain much less sodium than they used to, but, pre-packaged foods still contain too much sodium for people who already have high blood pressure.

The next time you are at the grocery store, look at the sodium content of the foods you buy regularly. Check how much sodium is in your breakfast cereal or even in your canned peas! Different brands of the same item can have different sodium contents – check around and start buying a different brand. Choose fresh veggies instead of canned!
