Ah, the fast food taco. Tons of greasy ground beef topped with sour cream and guacamole. Add some cheddar cheese and you've got about a million calories. But they taste so yummy! If you are craving a healthier version of the fast food taco, try the options below.

For beef tacos, use the leanest ground beef you can find: this should be 98% lean. Or, opt for a low fat option like ground turkey breast or even fat free refried beans! Add chili power and cumin or Mexican seasoning to the taco filling, plus some onion and a little garlic. Use small, fat free flour tortillas rather than hard taco shells. Add an once of low fat cheddar cheese, lettuce and tomato to your taco. Skip the sour cream and guacamole. Limiting yourself to only one taco will eliminate your eating another shell and adding more cheese.

Medical professionals generally recommend safe weight loss surgery as a last option when working with each patient. It is probably always best to work with traditional diet and exercise programs, with the support of a medical doctor, before deciding to on surgery to treat an obesity problem.

In fact, most research and medical literature strongly urge individuals to talk with their doctor or other health care professional about controlling weight before making a decision on any weight-loss program, including safe weight loss surgery. While several factors are recognized as contributing to overweight and obesity, the primary goal should first be to adjust food intake and increase physical activity. The medical profession now recognizes that psychological states, family habits, medication and genetics can all contribute to obesity. Safe weight loss surgery should not be thought of as a quick fix for this serious health condition. All of these various factors can be dealt with in a specially designed weight loss program that may include surgery.

Don't be afraid to tell your doctor that you would like to talk about your weight. As with any major decision, an informed consumer has a definite advantage. Be prepared to ask questions and take notes when discussing weight loss and safe weight loss surgery with your doctor. If you feel that having a family member or friend will help, ask someone to come with you when you visit with your doctor or a staff member at a center for weight loss.

Find out as much as you can about your weight-loss goals the benefits before joining a weight-loss program. Make sure you understand if you really need to lose weight or just need to avoid gaining more. Many weight loss surgical methods in the past have been very complex and invasive, involving isolation of parts of the digestive tract or even more complicated procedures. But new techniques such as lap band surgery have made safe weight loss surgery a real possibility. Candidates for obesity surgery include those who have a BMI of 40 or more, or a BMI of 35 to 40 and a health risk such as type 2 diabetes or severe sleep apnea. Surgical choices include: restrictive surgery that limits food intake; malabsorptive procedures that isolate the small intestine from the digestive tract; and a combination of the two types. Medical professionals are now advising against malabsorptive operations due to the risk of severe nutrition deficiencies.

There may be some complications. One study reports that even after safe weight loss surgery, some patients risk brain damage from vitamin B-1 deficiency. If treated right away with vitamin B-1 shots, patients quickly recover. But if the syndrome isn't recognized quickly, it can result in permanent brain damage. Tip from National Institutes of Health: Could my excess weight be caused by a medical condition such as hypothyroidism or by a medicine I am taking? (Hypothyroidism is when your thyroid gland does not produce enough thyroid hormone, a condition that can slow your metabolism—how your body creates and uses energy.)

The Truth Behind Milking Your Diet

For quite a while now, you may have been seeing ads on TV that claim that drinking milk or eating dairy products three times a day can help your body burn more fat and therefore help you to lose weight. In 2005, the Physicians Committee for Responsible Medicine (PCRM) filed a petition to stop these ads and the USDA and dairy industry has finally pulled the ads.

According to the PCRM, the studies used to back the claim that dairy assists weight loss are not scientifically sound. In fact, the PCRM is concerned that milk and dairy products are being toted as health foods at all especially because dairy contains a lot of saturated fat, sugar and cholesterol. This is a very important thing to keep in mind when you are shopping at the grocery store since many people don't know these facts because the dairy industry has been pushing the health benefits of milk for decades.

Sneaky Salt

Salt is everywhere and in almost everything, especially in pre-packaged foods. A lot of pre-packaged foods can contain as much as 1000 milligrams of sodium per meal. Considering that the daily recommended amount is 2400 milligrams per day, this is a huge problem. Due to new research that shows the link between sodium intake, high blood pressure, and heart disease, most of the diet foods contain much less sodium than they used to, but, pre-packaged foods still contain too much sodium for people who already have high blood pressure.

The next time you are at the grocery store, look at the sodium content of the foods you buy regularly. Check how much sodium is in your breakfast cereal or even in your canned peas! Different brands of the same item can have different sodium contents – check around and start buying a different brand. Choose fresh veggies instead of canned!

You Know, That Clear Stuff?

Water. Our bodies are mostly made up of water. And since this is true, it is absolutely essential that we get enough of it every day. But unfortunately, most people are seriously lacking in their water intake. Some people use the excuse that water tastes "blah". Others say that they don't like to go to the bathroom so many times a day. And still other people say that they just can't drink eight glasses of water every day.

Luckily for the people who don't like the taste of water, many companies now make flavored waters. Using the bathroom several times a day is a sign that your body is getting rid of toxins and not being able to drink "all that water" is a silly excuse. Water promotes weight loss and lessens water retention. It also helps your digestive system to work properly and maintain regular bowel movements, which helps remove unneeded substance from the body, too.

Sometimes it seems like whatever you can't eat is almost impossible to give up. Many diets require that dieters give up sugar and sweet snacks to lose weight. While this is actually a very good idea, especially for those who are diabetic, sugar can be one of the hardest things in the world to give up – or at least it sure can seem like it.

The next time you are in the grocery store, take a deep breath, grab the cart handle tightly, and head down the ice cream aisle. This isn't torture; it's a means to an end. There are a lot of really yummy sweet treats on the market now that diabetics and dieters alike can enjoy. Look for low sugar, low fat ice cream bars and other options. Skinny Cow, Weight Watchers, and Absolutely Free are three brands that offer a lot of diet friendly desserts.

Over-Under-Eating

Once you decide on a healthy eating program, stick to the parameters of the diet. Keep track of what you eat the way the diet dictates, and never skip meals, even if you think it may bring you closer to your weight loss goal. Skipping meals or even snacks can completely ruin your hard work with your diet. Plus, it isn't worth the hunger.

When you don't eat enough, your body goes into a form of shock. Your metabolism slows down significantly because your body thinks it is starving. Your body holds on to calories instead of burning them, causing you to stop losing weight or even to gain weight. Eating a lower amount of calories than you are used to from your bad eating habits is an integral part of weight loss, but don't skimp on the program's dictated amount of food – that will only result in unnecessary strain on your body.

Fattening Up the World

It seems that the integration of fast food restaurants and Western ways of life in countries like Thailand is having a profound effect on the health of the people of those countries. Thailand specifically was in the news recently for having the obesity rate in the country increase by 50% over the last 10 years. Many officials in Thailand blame the Westernization of the country for the epidemic.

It's no secret to most people that the sedentary Western lifestyle of desk jobs and drive through hamburgers can and does lead to weight problems. But the most interesting part about Thailand is that now cities like Bangkok are filled with weight loss solution ads and spas that use odd methods like suction and infra-red devices to help people quickly shed pounds. The generally consensus among Thai officials is that a diet higher in fat and a lifestyle lower in exercise is to blame for the obesity epidemic in Thailand.

Types of Weight Loss Surgery – Change Is Good

Bariatrics is a branch of medicine that deals with the control and treatment of obesity and allied diseases. The treatments and surgical procedures have changed and improved in recent years, to the point that diet, exercise and various types of weight loss surgery can be parts of a comprehensive program.

Weight loss surgery is an option for people who are severely obese and cannot lose weight by other methods or for those who have serious obesity-related health problems. Certain types of weight loss surgery can work for weight loss by restricting food intake. Some procedures actually interrupt the digestive process. In recent years, these types of weight loss surgery have become one part of an overall program that includes learning healthy eating behaviors and regular physical activity.

Many weight loss surgical methods in the past have been very complex and invasive, involving isolation of parts of the digestive tract or even more complicated procedures. But new techniques such as lap band surgery have made safe types of weight loss surgery a real possibility. Medical professionals are now advising against using only malabsorptive operations due to the risk of severe nutrition deficiencies.

One of the most popular types of weight loss surgery has been a restrictive surgical procedure. Laparoscopic weight loss surgery is more commonly called lap band surgery. (Lap band is a registered trademark.) The idea behind the operation is to create a small pouch in the upper part of the stomach, thus limiting food intake. With this procedure a band device is put in place through tiny incisions in the abdomen and is placed around the upper part of the stomach.

Gastric bypass surgery is generally a combination operation. The procedures combine both restrictive and malabsorptive techniques. Basically, gastric bypass surgery is one of the types of weight loss surgery that create a small stomach pouch to restrict the amount of food you can eat, in addition to constructing a bypass of the duodenum and other parts of the small intestine to cause malabsorption.

Because of the amount of weight (in fat) that is lost, the body may need reconstructive weight loss surgery. For many who lose significant amounts of weight through diet/exercise or weight loss surgery, this large weight loss in a short time results in large amounts of loose skin. (Skin often does not shrink quickly following surgery.) Weight loss patients often choose surgery that will help contour the body and restore the image the individual wants to see. As you consider types of weight loss surgery, remember that reconstructive surgery may also be an option.

Restaurant Etiquette

When you are at your favorite restaurant, you may feel the urge to order your favorite entrée, plus an appetizer, plus a cocktail, plus a dessert, and then munch on some bread while you wait. By exercising a little self control, you can beat these demons.

Place the bread basket at the opposite end of the table, or ask the waiter not to bring bread if you just can't say no. Skip the appetizer or, if you are truly hungry, get a small side salad. Don’t' order an alcoholic beverage – alcohol is full of empty calories and can make you forget your desire to control yourself. Split an entrée with someone else at the table. Or, immediately divid the portion in half and move the unwanted half to the other side of your plate. Get a take away carton to take the rest home or don’t take it home to avoid temptation tomorrow. Dessert is a trap at restaurants: wait until you get home and have a low fat ice cream.
