Childhood Obesity: Understanding the Problem

As is true with obese adults, there are many reasons why a child might be obese.  Some obesity is caused by medical conditions that inhibit the function of the thyroid or other parts of the body.  Some children become obese because their daily lives do not include regular exercise.  Other children struggle because they have developed poor eating habits.  A child’s poor eating habits can be caused by a number of factors, including general poor diet (i.e. eating fast food too frequently), eating too much at meals, or constant snacking and binge eating due to emotional issues.

The best way to address anyone’s obesity problem, especially a child’s, is to start at the doctor’s office.  Have some blood work done to be sure that your child doesn’t have a serious medical condition.  Then ask the doctor about helping your child learn better eating habits and get plenty of exercise.
