Chips, Cookies and Candies… Oh My!

When you even begin to think about weight loss, probably the first thing that pops into your mind is, "ooh, I'd love a candy bar right now," or "I wonder if there are any chips left?" For some reason, our bodies are trained to go right for whatever is the worst thing for us, and then we devour it before we realize what is happening. The trick with successful weight loss is to be aware of this tendency before we find ourselves elbow-deep in a bag of chocolate candy.

Part of being aware is to know your triggers. For example, do you start to drool when a fast food commercial comes on? Does the candy jar on your co-worker's desk beckon you? Try to avoid these temptations. If you just MUST have a cookie, remember that one is enough. Eat it slowly and savor the taste.

The Weight Loss Puzzle

Anyone can lose weight fast. Shedding pounds quickly through fad diets, starvation and other means is certainly possible. Keeping that weight off and staying healthy in the process is another issue. This is where unlocking the weight loss puzzle can really pay off.

Successful weight loss involves more than calorie reduction. It also involves a need to burn fuel efficiently and also have the right outlook. In addition, keeping the body healthy is also a necessity for weight loss to be worth the effort. Let's look at the pieces in the puzzle.

Caloric reduction
To lose weight, most people need to take a look at what they are eating. This can mean minor adjustments in some cases or even some pretty major eating alterations. The key here is to eat a healthy, well balanced diet that fits proper proportions. Striking the right balance means eating fruits, vegetables, proteins and even carbohydrates. Splurging is okay once in a while, but it shouldn't be a way of life. The idea is to burn more calories than are taken in to help weight loss take place.

Exercise
No one wants to hear that this is a required component, but it is. The fact is weight loss can happen without it, but not as effectively. Aerobic exercise, such as swimming, running, dancing and more, can help burn calories while also toning the body. When a person is in the process of losing weight, this can also help kick start the process and take it to the next level. When exercise is incorporated into daily life, the results can be lasting.

Attitude
This is another major component and one that is often overlooked. To make a plan to lose weight actually work, it's a good idea to approach it with a positive attitude. When the outlook is realistic, the outcome can be more than satisfactory. Set realistic goals and try to achieve them one at a time. Don't expect miracles overnight, but do expect results.

Supplements
When it's impossible to get every vitamin and mineral the body needs through diet, supplements can be worth a look, too. These can simply help ensuring the body stays healthy and energetic while burning pounds and even after. There are supplements, too, that can help with hunger cravings. Some people need to use these to get them started and others do not.

Weight loss isn't a magic proposition that's impossible to attain. When all the components necessary for success are incorporated, it's likely success will result. The process doesn't happen overnight, but it does happen.

5 Steps for Healthy Eating

1. Develop healthy eating habits. Working on a plan that will help you to eat better will ultimately help you to live longer. The food pyramid will give you a better idea about what kinds of foods you should be eating to promote a longer, healthier life.

2. Get off the couch! One thing that is sometimes ignored by dieters is the important of physical exercise.

3. Portion size is key to eating healthy. Most restaurants have portions that are as much as twice the appropriate amount, and this leads people to think that a portion is much larger than it should be.

4. Beware the fad diet! If a diet requires you to only eat one or two foods, or completely restricts what you can eat to the point where you cannot enjoy your meals, you may be on a fad diet.

5. When in doubt, get professional help. Doctors and dieticians are trained to help people with healthy weight loss.

Weight Scales: To Have or Not To Have

There are two conflicting schools of thought about the benefits and hindrances of owning and utilizing a weight scale. Some people feel that they are better able to keep themselves on track with their weight loss when they weigh themselves weekly. That way, they know the plan they are using is working to their advantage.

Other people feel that using a weight scale can be a huge hindrance to successful weight loss. Your weight depends not only on what you have eaten any given day, but also on water retention, and the time of day you weight yourself. If you notice that you feel differently depending on what the scale says, throw the thing out. Just because you are retaining water doesn't mean your diet isn't working! But, if you are truly a person who is motivated by weighing yourself, do so only weekly on the same day and at the same time of day.

Sure, It’s Fast, But Is It Food?

Fast food can easily be seen as a major cause of obesity, especially in the United States. Our lives have become so hectic with kids, spouses, housework, full-time jobs, and after-school activities, it may seem like there is no time to cook dinner for your family. Zipping through the drive-through for a hamburger may seem like it's saving you time, but it may be taking time away from you in the long run.

The high fat and low fiber content of fast food has the potential to affect more than just your waistline. There is very little good nutrition in most fast food meals, and this not only can lead to obesity, which can negatively affect your health. To avoid eating fast food, keep granola bars, low fat yogurt, and fresh fruit and vegetables in a cooler in your car for after extracurricular activities. If you have to get fast food, opt for a salad, not French fries.

Walk At Work

New studies have come out in the United Kingdom about the use of a treadmill. But not just any treadmill; this treadmill comes complete with a special arm that holds your computer at chest level so you can walk while you work. This invention is intended to help people who have sedentary jobs like office and desk jobs.

Many people who are stuck behind a desk five days a week don't have an opportunity to get any exercise. This special treadmill is designed to be used while you are at the office so you can exercise while you are working. The studies done on obese office workers showed that significant weight loss can be achieved by using the treadmill for 2 or 3 hours a day. The people used for the study did not normally do any exercise. Of course, the biggest issue is getting your boss to allow you to move your treadmill into your cubicle.

But I Hate To Get Sweaty!

Exercise is the most important part of successful weight loss besides proper eating habits. Getting exercise helps to boost your metabolism, which in turns helps you to burn calories and fat faster. But exercise does more than just get your body in a weight loss "mindset". Exercise helps get your blood pumping and your heart pounding – but in the best way. Cardio exercise stretches and strengthens the most important muscle in your whole body: your heart. And this is especially important if you have the potential for a heart condition or any other serious health problem.

Start off slowly – walking is a good way to break into the exercise habit. If you have a medical condition that may inhibit your ability to do cardio exercise, ask your doctor what kinds of exercise you can do and how vigorous you can be without harming yourself. The goal is self-improvement, not self-harm!

Social Gatherings: The Scourge of the Serious Dieter

Many social events are centered on food. In the summer, friends invite you over for a picnic or barbeque. In the fall, festivals offer tasty and fat-filled fair food like corndogs and donuts. In the winter, the holidays abound with turkey, mashed potatoes, and stuffing. The spring brings candy stuffed holidays and other family outings that forgo good eating habits. Here are some tips to beat the all-you-can-eat events:

1. Eat before you go. Being full can save your waistline.
2. Have small portions. Half a scoop of baked beans is plenty.
3. Bring something healthy to contribute.
4. Bring a low fat and low sugar sweet snack in your purse or pocket.
5. Bring your own food and claim you are on a special medical diet.
6. Avoid fried foods.
7. Avoid sugar-coated sweets like cookies, candies, and cakes.
8. Avoid anything saturated with butter.
9. Eat fresh veggies and fruit.
10. Skip second helpings.

When a child consistently finishes a whole bag of chips after school and never gets outside to play, you may be facing a potential problem with childhood obesity. Children with weight problems often grow up to become adults with weight problems. If you are an overweight adult, you already know how difficult it is to struggle with your weight for your whole life. But there is more than struggling that you need to be concerned about as a parent: obese children are much more prone to serious medical conditions now and in their adult years.

So how can you help your child beat a life of struggle and obesity-related health problems? Teach him or her proper eating habits and make sure he or she gets outside to play. Just these two things can ultimately change a potentially obese child's whole life both now and in the future.

Making Yourself Sick with Weight Loss

Sometimes a person is so obsessed with losing weight, he or she will do anything to get to the skinny body he or she wants. And while it's a good thing to be concerned about your health and appearance, it is not healthy to be so obsessed that you would do something that would ultimately hurt you.

What I'm talking about is starvation. Starvation, of course, is often seen (especially by women and teenagers) as the best way to kick off a diet. But starvation sends your body into a form of shock that makes it hold on to fat and any calories you give it. You may lose a little weight, but what you are burning is muscle, not fat. And when you do eat, that food is stored as fat immediately because your body is afraid it won't eat again for a long time. So don't starve yourself – it's not a diet, it's a dangerous disease.
